<image:caption>The South Dakota weather wasn't cooperating, so we extended our trip and drove to the Salton Sea. We stopped at Baker, CA for gas and saw the world's tallest thermometer. The unit was built in 1991 at a cost of $700,000. It is 134' high to commemorate the world record temperature set in Death Valley in 1913. The thermometer was snapped in half by strong winds two years after construction and had to be reinforced. It was shut down briefly in 2012 because the power bill was $8,000 per month. The original owner repurchased the thermometer and it was relighted in 2014.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We arrived in Vienna early evening and took an Uber taxi to the Hilton Danube Hotel. It was a beautiful hotel and located only 6 blocks from a subway station. We bought a Vienna Pass which entitled us to visit all major attractions. Bus pickups were made at most all of the attractions, but we learned early on that the bus took too long because of traffic and stops. We then traveled exclusively by subway. Vienna was a stop for music and art and not WW II history.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jeff had made reservations for another musical and we had a front row seats at the Austrian Dinner Show. Between the 3-course dinners, we experienced a program divided into 3 entertaining show scenes. The Ensemble consisted of highly talented musicians, excellent vocal soloists and spirited dancers, who appeared in colorful local costumes of the various musicale regions visited. During dinner, typical Viennese music was played live.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hohensalzburg castle is the largest attraction in Salzburg. We boarded a funicular railway which runs every 10 minutes to climb to the castle. Initially built in 1077, and later enlarged between 1495 and 1519, it became one of the largest fortresses in Europe. Since then the castle’s exterior has remained substantially the same. Throughout the long history of Hohensalzburg, the castle was never conquered and remains one of the few castles with this status in Austria.</image:caption>

It is surprising but this area is designated as having some of the densest concentrations of archaeological resources in the North American subarctic. More than 500 sites indicate that ancient peoples inhabited this area for at least 10,000 years. The Alaska Range is in the background with elevations over 12,000 feet.</image:caption>

We learned that over 5000 mariners were killed in cargo ships sunk by German submarines. On that sinking, many of the remaining crew were rescued by this coast guard station personnel.</image:caption>

The choir tour was secretly arranged by the members without the director’s knowledge and members gave up their Spring break for the tour.. Because of the secrecy, the first soprano directed from the front row using her music folder and the actual choir director lead only two of the numbers. Since it was a surprise tour, there were no programs. As expected, their final number was “I’m a ‘ramblin’ wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer…”</image:caption>
